Vernon County has always thrived from local agriculture. Lot of the farms started by the settlers are still in the industry today. Our county has a handful of large dairies but most are still small dairy operations. On-the-farm lodging in Vernon County will get you a hands-on experience for your family. The Farmers Inn in rural Viroqua and the East Ridge Farm of rural Westby has lodging facilities on the farm for you and your family to enjoy. These farms gives people the opportunity for an education experience, hiking, feed & petting animals, private hunting (East Ridge only) and plenty of time to relax in the country! Kickapoo Valley Ranch is also a great place to relax with cabins on the hill overlooking the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. Horseback riding, nature hiking, Amish community exploring, birding or just watching nature at it's best from the private cabin decks is available to you and your family and friends! The food industry has been growing in our county from a leader in the
creameries - Westby
Co-op Creamery's to a leader in the maple syrup industry, Ocooch
Mountain Acres. This area is also know for our smaller on-the-farm
products such as produce, honey, perennial, organic eggs & meat. The
Amish in the area also have organic
eggs, maple syrup, yummy candy, bakeries and a strong wood industry with
cabinet makers, small barn and cabin builders. In rural Cashton, the Amish
also have a weekly auction for quilts, produce and furniture. Farmers Markets in Viroqua and Hillsboro bring the farmers and artisans including Amish off their private land to sell their baskets, produce, honey, arts, maple syrup and much more. These Farmers Markets are on Saturday mornings starting from Memorial Day weekend through the 2nd weekend in October.
