Blackhawk Trail ~ "Trail of Tears"

Vernon County was the site of some of the most significant events in what is remembered as the Blackhawk War.

In 1832, the Sauk warrior Blackhawk led his desperate band of 1000 men, women and children through the area toward the Mississippi River. In pursuit, was a militia of 1, 700 soldiers, including such historic figures as Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis.

Despite heroic efforts by Blackhawk to avoid battle, his band was ultimately cornered and slaughtered. A seriers of 11 historic markers traces Blackhawk's route through the county and other historic events.

The Vernon County Historical Society offers additional information on the Blackhawk Trail and other important events in the county's history at its museum in Viroqua.
