The Mississippi River boarding the west side of Vernon County offers backwater canoeing and kayaking opportunities along with boathouse, fishing boats and fast boat areas for water-skiing! Beach and docking areas are easy to find with our recreational map and signage along the road. The most popular docking area is at the Blackhawk Park off HWY 35. The Kickapoo River, known as the "Crookedest River in Wisconsin," winds through the Wildcat Mountain and the Kickapoo Valley Reserve and offers canoeing, kayaking and camping opportunities. Many outfitters are available: Titanic Canoe Rental and Drifty's Canoe Rental in Ontario (HWY 33) and Crooked River Canoe, Kayak and Cabins in Readstown (HWY 14/131). Sidie Hollow Lake, off HWY 56 west of Viroqua offers a relaxing fishing area for small fishing boats and canoe fishing. This is also a great location for hiking, birding, picnicking and RV and primitive camping. As you drive through the winding roads to reach the lake, all of a sudden the hills will open up to an expansive view of this serene lake surrounded by lush hillsides. The kids will love playing on the play set, looking for trout under the bridge, and catching tadpoles along the shoreline. There’s great hillside fishing, also, and since only trolling motors are allowed and the lake is so large, you really get a feel for being alone with nature.
